Winter 2022

2022 Annual Certification Pin

The species selected for the 2022 annual certification pin is the delicate, sweetly fragrant grass pink orchid (Calopogon tuberosus). The beautiful rose-pink to pale orchid flowers open in sequence from late June thru early July. In Missouri these plants are found in fens in the southeastern part of the state.  To receive your pin, all you need to do is submit 40 volunteer hours and 8 advanced training hours by December 31, 2022.  And, with all the opportunities available in our chapter and across the state, that is easily done.
Dutch Oven Cooking
Several chapter members were cooking it up at Knob Noster State Park in October.
Nancy Konkus, Rita Brown, Paul Landkamer, Elizabeth Duckworth, Samantha Pennington, Missy Zimmerschied and Roxanne Stockdall demonstrated how to cook using a Dutch oven with four recipes: Campers Omelette, Easy Tamale Pie, Vegan Chili and Bee Sting Buns. We had roughly 25 people, including park staff, come for samples and offer critics. All our chapter members fielded questions. Chris Edmondson and other park staff were ready and willing to assist us in any way. Although it was a bit chilly, it was a nice clear day and it was quite nice near the heat. I hope we get to do it again, I need the practice.

Christmas Bird Count
On December 28, the Hi Lonesome Chapter hosted our 13th annual Christmas Bird Count for  the National Audubon Society 122nd season.  While the early morning rain prevented any owling prior to sunrise, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the participants.  This year, we had one person watching her feeders and 24 others in the field covering nine sections.  Among the birds identified were a Belted Kingfisher, a Merlin, 2 Brown Trashers and 4 Pileated Woodpeckers.
As we start 2022, there are so many opportunities for you to get involved!  Stream Team, Eagle Watch, Barn Owl Project and so much more. Check out our website to see what is happening . . .hilonesome.missourimasternaturalist.org .
You can post your participation hours there, too.  It's easy.  And, if you do have any questions or concerns, let Roxanne Stockdall, Time Keeper Extraordinaire, know.
