Celebrating Missouri's Bicentennial

The High Lonesome Chapter celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the Great State of Missouri at Cole Camp's Old Fashioned Picnic at Ezekial Williams Park, by teaching visitor about Missouri's State Bird, the Bluebird. Visitors to our booth learned about bluebirds and were even able to build a bluebird house.  Isayah Deck(top picture) was so excited.  His dad, Joshua, helped Isayah hang the birdhouse he built that same evening and sent the photo with this note:
Thank you so much for the Bluebird box build. Isayah really enjoyed himself and is very proud of the box. We hung it up on our garden fence post when we got home. Donnie was such a great help.

Could you send me some more information about your group? Do you have a web site?

Have a blessed evening and week!
Thanks again,
Joshua Deck
Rain did not interfere with trash pick up.
What's A Little Rain?
On Saturday, May 22, Kathy and Ryan filled 8 trash bags in 3 hours completing the 1-mile stretch from Hi Lonesome Rd to Cheese Creek Rd along North 65 Highway.  Roxanne filled 1.5 bags in about 1 hr covering a different section.  Despite the occasional light rain, they kept working and took advantage of the cooler temps on the cloudy day. Many hands make light work.  The next trash pick-up day is September 25 at 10 a.m.  Hope to see you there!
A Feather in Our Cap . . .Eagle Feather, That Is
The Missouri Eagle Watch program was featured on Earth Day on the Newsy Channel.  Debbie and her hubby, Ed, were interviewed for this as were Janet Haslerig, MDC project coordinator, and Mr. Paneitz, another volunteer. The interviewer first contacted Janet and Janet recommended volunteers to be interviewed. Kim & Donnie are monitoring the first nest seen with the flapping eaglet and Debbie is monitoring the nest that shows two adult eagles sitting together in their sycamore tree nest.

Owl Boxes are Filling Up
The Barn Owl boxes are getting a workout from the many birds that are using them.  At last check, 36 owlets were confirmed in the 19 boxes.  In two of the boxes, Mother Owl was not letting us see her eggs/babies so the number is probably closer to 42-45 owlets!  Let Gerald or Ruth know if you want to come along on the next check.
Time Keeping
Record your Advanced Training hours and your Citizen Science hours via our new webpage: hilonesome.missourimasternaturalist.org .  Thank you to Roxanne for keeping training and event calendars up-to-date. Send any photos you have to Jerry Barnabee and he will get them added in.
If you have any questions or concerns, let Roxanne know.
